AbstractFor developing countries, collaboration with foreign suppliers of technology with the purpose of getting access to new technology can constitute an important vehicle for achieving national objectives and goals. In this regard, foreign investment in the form of joint ventures is a relatively new phenomenon in the Nepalese industry. This study examines Nepalese firms established through the joint venture mode, both in the conventional as well as relatively new areas of business. The objective of this paper is to look into the joint venture contract process in general, factors contributing to successful joint venture contracts, the partner selection process and finally the associated problems of the joint ventures. Based on the relevant literature, the research framework was derived. Interviews with a structured questionnaire for 16 companies were conducted to examine the joint venture contract process, success factors, and the partner selection process. Mann-Whitney test and Kendall's Tau-b were used as statistical tests. In addition, the discriminant analysis was used to identify the most significant influencing factors of successful joint venture contracts. The results show that there is a sequence of joint venture contract process and there exists some factors which are related to the success and failure of joint venture contracts such as the degree of prior knowledge, degree of strategy compatibility, government policies, and financial status. The presentation also includes a discussion of implications for firms and the government regarding the necessity of adopting a strategy which incorporates the focus of enhancing technological self-reliance as well.
