Abstract | After years of physical, political and psychological isolation, Laos - a small, poor and isolated countty is opening up to the world. With the new economic reform and open door policy, investment from both foreign and domestic investors in several economic sectors (including construction sector) has increased. However, the needed information on how the construction industry in Laos operates is not available. This study attempts to report and evaluate the past development of the Lao construction industry and the analysis of the structural components affecting the industry - the clients, contractors, suppliers, resources, and other stakeholders - as advanced by Porter. In addition this thesis presents the educational system in Laos with the view of understanding how professionals and workers are prepared for the construction industry. Based on evaluated information, the study also proposes appropriate strategies for developing the industry in the country to meet the new environment changes. This development and structure analysis are conducted to provide data that would benefit both potential entrants and existing contractors as well in their process of strategy planning. |
