AbstractA solution scheme is presented to decompose seismic waves into their constituent waves. In viscoelastic multilayered half spaces, three fundamental problems have to be considered, i.e., a homogeneous half space, a homogeneous full space, and two half spaces perfectly bonded together. Fourier tranforms with respect to an in-plane coordinate are employed for plane problems. Hankel transforms with respect to the radial cylindrical coordinate are employed for threedimensional space problems. Employing proper contours in the complex plane, applying the residue theorem and an accurate method for approximating infinite integrals in the far field, the Cauchy's principal value of each infinite integral is obtained in a closed fomi. For each fundamental problem, far field displacement functions are obtained in such a way so that it contains one.discrete surface wave and continuous spectra of body waves i.e. pressure waves and shear waves. These far field displacement functions are then decomposed into their constituent waves. In order to demonstrate the capability of the proposed scheme illustrative examples are presented. From numerical examples presented it is observed that at the surface nodal line, whatever the direction of the input acceleration, the acceleration components of the surface wave and pressure wave are dominant whereas the acceleration component of the shear wave is very small.
