Abstract | Conservation of natural resources is more important where it is scarce. Building success in this conflicting situation is very hard though it is not impossible. But any effort towards the conservation could not result positively where the local people having stake on them are hostile. People's socio-economic characteristics, however, have major influence on resources use and exploitation. Hence, conservation of natural resources should consider those variables having influence on them and should manage them. Natural resources scarcity is the major problem in Koshi Tappu region and present practices are not efficient. Various resources are extracted by the poor households to earn for their living which is apparently sold with cheaper price to substitute other sources like fuel. The livestock grazing is in open access condition with no scarcity value incurred. Hence, the resources of wildlife reserve are draining without any reflection of its value. The livestock rearing of the region has significant influence on those inefficiencies and this is further aggravated by keeping larger herd size of less productive animals irrespective of sustainable carrying capacity of the resources. This shows the sever management problem. Conservation of Wildlife Reserve resources in this context become complex task even hardly possible to maintain under present condition of management. Initiation and development of community buffer zones and the improvement in socio-economic status of the people would have greater scope of reversing the situation. Livestock development strategy is the one which provides better alternative with the production benefits to the household economy and instinctively relieve the pressure on Wildlife Reserve achieving conservation benefits. Community involvement in conservation activities would ensure conservation of Wildlife Reserve with sustainable use of natural resources. |
