AbstractThis study attempts to develop a methodology for assessing the environmental impacts in large irrigation systems. The Thamaka sub-project, part of the Mae Klong irrigation project, in Thailand has been taken as the project under consideration. Drainage water quality, ground water table, ground water quality, water-borne diseases and soil parameters were selected for intensive study. Selected parameters were analyzed using chemical analysis and Geographic Information System (GIS). Vector based thematic maps on the impact parameters were developed by digitizing existing maps and information and the same were analyzed to detect any impacts on the environment. In addition a computer program was written to assess the environmental impacts on the basis of water balance model and the same was applied to the study area and it indicates that the most of the environmental impacts of the system studied are due to excessive water supply. From the intensive study it can be concluded that the large irrigation systems over a period of time causes impacts on environment which could vary from system to system and also within the system from location to location. The methodology used in this study could be used to study the impacts on environment in large irrigation systems and could be a useful tool for monitoring and evaluation of irrigation systems.
