Abstract | Slaking and swelling behavior of' siltstones of Lam Ta Khong Pumped Storage
Project were investigated. Slaking can occur by wetting. nut its intensity depended on
the initial moisture conditions and the manner the rock absorbed moisture. Air-dried
samples slaked badly when immersed in water. But. it did not slake much when slowly
absorbing moisture in humid room. Near saturated sample did not slake when
immersed in water. Slaking intensity in wetting test increased with a decrease in
degree of saturation. The siltstones did not contain expansive clay minerals as
indicated by the free swell values and other index properties. nut the result of swell-consolidation
(SC) tests of air-dried samples showed very high values (0.56-14.86%)
of swelling strains and pressures (2.6-16 MPa). While some consolidation-swell (CS)
test showed a much lower values. This was due to effect of slaking of the samples in
SC tests when water was added at very low axial pressure. |
