AbstractFloor planning applications require the description of objects and their spatial relationships. Spatial relationships between objects can be visualized as constraints on these objects. Two vital issues that require consideration are appropriate representation of these objects and also of their spatial relationships. The objective of this thesis is to present a language suitable for specifying the spatial relationships between objects as constraints, which thereby deals with the latter issue. The essence of this language lies in the set of operators that covers a varied range of spatial relationships on some approximation of the objects. The representation of the object is simplified by exploiting the bounding box approximation technique in making the actual description of the object transparent to the constraints. Thus, operators such as touch, containment, relative distance, accessibility etc., are defined for specify spatial relationships on boxes. Furthermore, we propose an implementation of the operators using the CLP(R) system, a constraint logic programming language that deals with real numbers and can handle both linear and non-linear constraints. Finally, we illustrate the application of the proposed language on floor planning problems
