Abstract | Stability and stabilization methods required for 125m high vertical cut in
the northern face of the Khao Chee.Chan, an abandoned limestone quarry, situated
in Sattahip district, Thailand to facilitate carving of a 109m high Lord Buddha's
image have been studied. Geolog'ical mapping was done in the field on the slope
face and mechanical strengi:h properties of the rock samples collected from the
site were determined in the laboratory. Based on the geological mapping, surface
roug·hness measured in field and direct shear test under low normal stress on
saw-cut and intact specimens, uniaxial compressive strength, point load index,
Brazilian tensile strength performed in laboratory stability analysis of the required
vertical slope has been conducted. The vertical slope required has been derived
from the model prepared by the department of Fine Arts, Thailand. Analytical
method given by HOEK & BRAY, (1981) using· limit equilibrium approach of
stability analysis has been used. Based on the above mentioned analysis, the
proposed cut found to be unstable by itself resulting in a need of suitable
orientation of cut, external support and special blasting technique. Grouted
cable anchors and excavation using presplit blasting with buffer blast holes
seemed to be suitable for the long· term stability of the slope. |
