AbstractA solution scheme is presented for the determination of free-field ground motion, from the measured accelarogram at a single point on the ground surface. It is appropriate to note that this technique identifies all dominant seismic waves. Based on the shallow focus earthquake mechanism a hypothesis is proposed to obtain the steady state correlation function. An efficient numerical integration method for constructing the infinite element impedance matrix is devised, which reduces the computational cost drastically. A numerical technique for the inverse Fourier transform is presented and validated. In order to demonstrate the capability of the scheme, which is proposed for the determination of free-field ground motion an illustrative example is presented. In this example soil medium is assumed as multi-layered visco-elastic half space. The proposed technique could be easily extended for the entire soil-structure interaction analysis.
