AbstractThis research is a preliminary attempt to analyse the gasoline demand in Thailand. The study focuses on two parts. In the first part, the past energy consumption, its relationship to economic growth and the general energy situation are surveyed. Also, the data of the gasoline market in Thailand is included. In the second part, an analy~is of gasoline demand is carried out by using econometric methods to quantify the past behavior of gasoline demand. The study considers two products, regular gasoline and premium gasoline. The log-linear functional form is selected by the Box-Cox test. The five general models are used to estimate the demand and then select the suitable model in order to estimate the demand for each product. It is found that the demand for regular gasoline is inelastic with respect to price and income. For premium gasoline, both short - and long-run elasticities can be estimated. The short run price elasticity is inelastic whereas the long-run price elasticity is elastic. The income elasticity cannot be estimated in the premium case according to the multicollinearity problem.
