AbstractA mathematical model is newly developed in order to improve the wastewater quality indices with the addition of the alkalinity variable, some reaction rate equations and the movement of sediment. The input water quality parameters which describe the characteristics of the wastewater are first estimated from the available data from INAGA WA report, 1982. The numerical solutions of the 1st order difference method is modified and improved by the central order difference method. From this numerical solution we can get better results compared to the 1st order difference method. After the modification of the model the coefficients are adjusted until the simulated data are reasonably matched with the observed data. Results from this investigation indicate that the model gives very satisfactory reproduction of water qualities and the removal efficiency of the sediments and BOD. From the sensitivity analysis the mathematical model is sensitive to all the reaction rate coefficients. The main inputs for the mathematical model is the dimension of the rock-bed reactor, initial porosity, flow rate, and influent water quality indices such as POM, ISS, DO, DOM, NH4 + - N, NO3- - N, and Alkalinity. The model evaluates the effluent water quality indices and sediment of organics in sediment and inorganics in sediments, VSS and SS. From these results the removal efficiency can be calculated. From that results it can suggest, whether this type of reactor is applicable or not for particular influent concentration.
