AbstractOptical storage, which has the advantage of higher storage capacity and longer archival life than its magnetic counterpart, is very suitable for systems that use large database. However, the overall access time for this kind of storage is longer than it is in magnetic. In a network database, where jobs of reading or writing are done in queue, this drawback has a great effect on the system's performance. What is done here is looking for the set of values for the parameters that affect the access time that will give the best performance of the system. It was shown that optical storage can compete with magnetic if some of its parameter values are changed, e.g., the parameters for the access times.
