AbstractQuery processing in the framework of object-oriented databases has been investigated for some time. However, the issue has been discussed mostly without theoretical foundations. In the present work, query processing has been treated in a formal way, provided with firm theoretical grounds. Following F-logic (KIFER and LAUSEN, 1989), a formal object-based model is formulated and used as the basis upon which a query system has been built. Based on the given model, two query languages, an object calculus and algebra, have been defined. Query safety and equivalence between the object calculus and algebra have been discussed in detail. Finally, transformation rules for algebraic expressions have been given as a basis for query optimization.
