AbstractForest land in Bangladesh covers only about 9% of the land, which is very low by any standard. Not more than 50% of the forest area is covered by trees. Further, over the years the annual depletion rate has been very high, over 37,000 hectares per year, while recorded forest land is only about 2.85 million hectares. Increase in population, growing demand for forest resources and traditional forest management practices are responsible for such a miserable scenario. Almost all forest-based industries or processing units face a shortage of raw materials and operate with a low level capacity utilization. However, every year a huge loss of forest products are caused because of technological stagnation. Wide gap between demand and supply has been persistent and this gap is expected to widen in the future. Control of the depletion/degradation of forests is a necessary condition for sustainable developmen.t and maintenance of a sound environmental condition. For sustainable management of forest resources in Bangladesh, a strong institutional arrangement is crucial. At present, the existing forest institutions suffer from the following major problems - manpower, both in quality and quantity; education/training facilities; availability of funds and logistics; administrative and other supports. Measures should be taken to remove the major impediments in the forest sector for conservation and rehabilitation of this important resource.
