AbstractApplying new technologies becomes a new trend in enterprises in Vietnam after the renovation policy of the government, December 1987. Machine tool is one of the important industries in manufacturing sector in Vietnam. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) - main applications of information technology in manufacturing are considered by many plants in the industry. The research attempts to identify and assess the conditions affecting the process of introducing CNC machines, CAD, and CAM systems in a machine tool plant in Vietnam. One model consists of five main factors infrastructures, internal assets, target products, management, and external factors was developed and operationalized in one specific plant in the industry to achieve the objective The needs for introduction of CNC machines, CAD, and CAM systems exist in the plant. Commitment of the top management is the most favorable condition, while capital, and knowledge infrastructure are major barriers the plant is facing in introducing them. The study proposes alternatives for introduction of CNC machines, CAD, and CAM systems, they are useful for companies in the machine tool firm in Vietnam in terms of introduction of CNC machines, CAD, and CAM systems. One specific option is recommended for the plant studied.
