AbstractMost of the existing maps which have done, have not enough information for the beginner user to understand the terrain characteristic. Obtaining understandable maps is an important task in comtemporany Computer-Assisted Cartography. The pictorial effect of some maps is emphasized by relief shading, a half tone overprint that simulates the appearance of sunlight and shadows on the terrain and provides the illusion of three dimensional topography. The relief shading is a technique for making hypsography on a map appear three dimensional by the use of graded shadow effects. In our study, we consider physical, physiological and psychological factors (table 1.1) and combine them for developing an algorithm of colorful relief shading using the existing methodology which can able to produce only a simple shading map. The colors would be stored together with contour lines and will be easy to understand for every user. This study provide advantages for efficient computer processing of hill shading.
