AbstractAs a new tool for digital image processing and analysis, this research study shows how mathematical morphology can be used for solving sophisticated problems in digital images. Some basic and model transformations of mathematical morphology are discussed which are suitable for information extraction from digital images. Composing the most basic transformations with logical set operations, other useful and more complicated model transformations are obtained. These transformations give a vast choice of applications to fulfill the task for image processing and analysis. Set theory is the most important theoretical tool to form the theory of Mathematical Morphology. Morphological transformations provide the systematic alteration of the geometric content of an image while maintaining the stability of important geometric characteristics. From the morphological transformations, an entire class of morphological filters can he constructed that often be used in place of the standard linear filters. Linear filters sometimes distort the geometric form of an image, but morphological filters leave much of that form intact. Using morphology it is possible to avoid the error-prone detection step and develop more robust image processing algorithm. Finally, some applications are given to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the mathematical morphological approach to extract information from digital images.
