| Abstract | A critical gap exists in engineering industry specific strategic research in Pakistan. This research study recommends a qualitative business strategy analysis, formulation, and implementation approach. In addition it points out the directions for future change required in engineering design firms in order to respond more effectively to a rapidly changing national economic environment. The case study is focused on Indus Associated Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd.-- a pioneering engineering consultancy firm in the country. The firm, established in 1964, currently operates in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering fields. In 1991 IAC's sales revenues were Rs. 19,822,679. A fundamental question in the firm's future is its ability to define a plausible strategic vision and to adapt to this redefined direction under a new generation of directors'. Using the business strategy framework recommended by Hax and Majluf as a basis. a new set of business strategies is formed and an implementation approach is proposed based on a relationships model for strategic management. The model was developed on the basis of current trends in strategic management of engineering design firms world-over. A comprehensive in-depth personal interview technique was used to identify environmental opportunities and threats, and intern.al strengths and weaknesses, which lead to the development of a recommended business mission and business strategies. |
