Abstract | This research study investigates the queueing handover scheme with guard channel that is
applied to mobile satellite communications system. Some system parameters in this study base on
the IRIDIUM system. This handover scheme allows queue buffer and reserves the channel
exclusively for handover calls . The results of system performance are obtained by the discrete
event simulation model. These show, for example, the new call blocking probability, the handover
failure probability, the forced termination probability, average waiting time and the noncompleted
call probability. Moreover, the effects of guard channel and queue size on those performance are
shown. The optimal guard channel and appropriate queue size are determined by defining the
overall blocking probability or cost function. The required number of optimal guard channels
between terrestrial cellular and LEO satellite systems are compared. |
