AbstractThe Ravi River is one of the major rivers of Pakistan. It has been heavily polluted by inadequately treated municipal and industrial wastewater. This study is intended to evaluate the impact of municipal and industrial pollution on the river water quality. The main objective of the study is to identify appropriate water quality management strategies. MIKE 11 Water Quality model was calibrated, under unsteady state conditions, to simulate water quality conditions using BOD, DO and Temperature as parameters. Under steady state conditions, the model was applied to evaluate the pollution conditions as well as different treatment alternatives for the future year 1997. Model simulations with minimum 7 days consecutive flow in the river with a probability of once in 10 years suggested the need for control measures to protect the water quality in the river. Downstream sewage transport with treatment has also been evaluated as water quality strategy. It was found that by transporting all the Lahore sewage to downstream at the point where higher dilutions are available, due to input through link canal, offers lower level of treatment as compared to the sewage treatment at their original locations at upstream Economic comparison of two alternatives; first, higher level of sewage treatment at original points, second, lower degree of treatment along with sewage transport to a downstream location, should be made to arrive at the economical best solution. Enforcement agencies need to ยท be strengthen in term of trained staff, equipments and legislative support for the effective pollution control.
