Abstract | It is important to estimate the components of water balance in a large irrigation project. The quantity of water should be clarified to understand water demand behavior. The water balance in three sub-projects of Phitsanulok Irrigation Project was studied for the period of 1991 through 1994. The rainfall trend over the command area in long term period indicated that 1991-1993 was in the drought period. Available data allowed estimates to be made for some components of the water balance equation and the storage change was the residual. Average areal rainfall in each subproject was estimated by Thiessen Polygon method and the effective rainfall was calculated from previous studies in the project area. The reference evapotranspiration was calculated using Penman Monteith and F AO Modified Penman methods. Considering three sub-projects in this study, Phlai Chumphon had consumed more irrigation water than the other two sub-projects. Thabua lacked irrigation water most and used other water sources extensively at the field level. The overall efficiency was calculated in the study, and the results indicated that the dry season irrigation efficiency was higher than the wet season in every sub-project. Phlai Chumphon and Dong Setthi sub-projects sometimes had negative overall efficiency due to the unusual excess effective rainfall on a monthly basis. Cultivation of upland crop should be promoted in dry season to reduce irrigation water requirements. |
