Abstract | This study concerns with the integrated use of surface and ground water for irrigation in Narayani Zone llTigation Development Project of Nepal. The project is facing operational problem resulting from the umeliable and inadequate water supply. This study aims to mitigate the existing problem by using surface and ground water in an integrated way. A linear programming conjunctive use model with maximization of net annual benefit as a objective function was developed to obtain the optimum cropping pattern and the allocation of surface and ground water for irrigation. Canal discharge, safe yield of groundwater, net annual benefit of each crop, irrigation water requirement and available land were used as the constraint for the model. The result obtained from the optimization model showed a significant increase in overall cropping intensity as well as the net annual benefit. In order to represent the most conservative condition, the model was rnn by assuming the main canal at FSL throughout the year. However, the optimum cropping pattern and net annual benefit could not be obtained. The wet season cropping intensity was found quite low. It indicates the necessity of integrated use of surface and ground water in the project. The integrated use of surface and ground water was found to be the most appropriate solution to mitigate the existing operational problem. |
