Abstract | In developing countries, the significance of promoting entrepreneurship is noticeable for accelerating economic development, employment generation and wealth creation. Many studies underlined on entrepreneurship education and the number of research on entrepreneurship is increasing day by day due to its importance on socio-economic development. But to identify the entrepreneurial characteristics and motivate the educated people in entrepreneurial activities, still there are some problems to be resolved. This research study aims to investigate the influence of individual psychological characteristics (i.e., innovativeness, locus of control, self-confidence, propensity to take risk, need for achievement and tolerance for ambiguity), subjective norms and perceived behavioral control on entrepreneurial intention among university students in Dhaka, Bangladesh. For this research, the survey methodology was used. The sample size for this research study was determined to be 385 students who were drawn from two universities: Dhaka University and Jagannath University located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The participation of respondents in this study was on a voluntary basis. The entrepreneurial intention was a dependent variable while innovativeness, locus of control, propensity to take the risk, need for achievement, self-confidence, tolerance for ambiguity, subjective norms and self-efficacy were independent variables. Thus, the study examined the validity of eight independent variables. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and correlation coefficient hierarchical multiple regression analysis was employed in order to analyze data through SPSS. The study found that subjective norms, self-efficacy, propensity to take risk and self-confidence had a significant and positive influence on students’ entrepreneurial intention. This study contributes in two important way. First, it helps to fill the gap in understanding the university students’ perceptions on entrepreneurial intention in developing countries. Second, the significance of this study is it uncovers the influential factors on student's entrepreneurial intention, and through facilitating entrepreneurship, their mind might be diverted towards entrepreneurship due to overpopulation, technological advancement, and unemployment problem. |
