AbstractObject-oriented programming languages, including Smalltalk, are widely used today as tools in software projects. Some software projects have shown that the vast bulk of their cost lies with the fixing errors at the implementation and test phases of the work. The costs are actually caused by imprecision in specification and design phases; imprecision of problem space, as well as, imprecise understanding of the behavior and characteristic of the programming language used. This research is aimed to provide a denotational semantic description of Smalltalk, conforming to Scott-Strachey approach. The description includes: object model, store and environment, semantic domain, semantic functions, and semantic equations; applying the concept of full object (class definition and method definition are also modeled as ordinary objects). The object-oriented programming environment used in this research is Smalltalk V/286 R.2 under a DOS machine.
