Abstract | This thesis presents a mechanism for providing domain name services for dynamic hosts in the Internet. The domain name system is a generalized mechanism to locate resources in the Internet and also to advertise their availability. It is based on the concept of a distributed database. Advanced technologies and changing user preferences have brought about a significant change in the operational outlook of contemporary computer network sites by the introduction of dynamic Internet clients that could appear as transient or mobile hosts. A new type of resource record that contains the full qualified domain names of a dynamic host and its primary name server is described. The domain name of primary server in the resource record is used for indirect resolution of queries arriving at secondary name servers. A new server- to- server protocol to preserve semantic consistency of distributed domain name server databases is described. This new protocol mechanism is interoperable with sites continuing to use the existing DNS service. The proposed mechanism has been implemented and prototypes were tested in a simulation environment. The test system was found to perform satisfactorily. A comparative study of the performance of proposed mechanism with present domain name system operation and extension methods proposed by others is also presented. Indirect resolution of name server queries is shown to provide the greatest benefits while relative disadvantages of techniques to maintain distributed database consistency by dynamic propagation of actual updates is discussed. |
