Abstract | Hypermedia systems are emerging as a new class of complex information management systems and next wave of technology that will radically revolutionize the traditional information management approach. They provide flexible access to information by incorporating new techniques, such as navigation, annotation, and tailored presentation, can help users gain control of the information explosion in more efficient, productive ways. As a new approach, it faces some fundamental problems: disorientation in hypermedia information space and cognitive overhead. This research is concerned with making an attempt to overcome these problems by developing a framework of hypermedia data model based on object-oriented and semantic modeling concepts. The model is described informally and formally, using Z specification language. The work shows that high-level abstract view to the hypermedia data model considerably simplifies a browsing and graphical presentation of hypermedia information space. Finally, a working prototype of the Hypermedia Authoring Tool, totally based on the developed model, was implemented and demonstrated to support and test the model. The tool, while featuring a powerful object-oriented concepts along with composition mechanism, is retaining easy-to-use for non-technical users, by providing the modern GUI capabilities. |
