AbstractThe preventive maintenance of ships requires that the ships be brought to the dockyard and be made non-operational for the duration of maintenance and repairs. Thus, it is essential that this operation be carried out in the shortest possible time to achieve a high degree of ship availability. The Royal Thai Navy (RTN.) makes use of periodic maintenance policy based on ship's maintenance manual. The maintenance department decides the how and when of the maintenance. Such maintenance operation is also known as planned maintenance system (PMS.). However, frequently the pla1med maintenance schedule does not match with the Navy's operational plan. Thus the ships have to be maintained only when they are not assigned to any particular operation. Another type of maintenance necessary for the ships is the breakdown maintenance or repairs. This has to be carried out in addition to regular maintenance and is handled separately. The problem to be addressed in this thesis deals with the development of a methodology for achieving an efficient ship engine maintenance plan for the RTN. taking into consideration the following constraints : [1]. The ships can be spared for repairs only during randomly occurring finite duration of time opportunities only. They can not be made available, for this purpose at will , at any time. [2]. The number of ships that can be maintained at a time are limited on account of limited dockyard facilities. [3]. The maintenance operation is to be performed taking other types of resource availability constraints into account. [ 4]. The facility is to be divided between two types of maintenance e.g. overhauls and repairs. In order to use the limited repair resources effectively it is planned to set up the priorities for carrying out overhauls, repairs and replacements. For this purpose use will be made of the MCDM model using PROMETHEE. The criteria to be employed in the decision model are cost of deviating from optimal maintenance plan, cost of maintenance operation or the budget and equipment reliability improvement that can be achieved through repairs maintenance. It is also planned to develop a suitable methodology for executing PMS. for ship engines taking into consideration the constraints outlined above
