Abstract | Global climate is undergoing changes due to the carbon dioxide emission and this phe- nomenon is expected to continue. It has impact on many sectors, including agriculture. Decrease in water availability, increase in evapotranspiration and decrease in soil moisture are some of the pathways that affect agriculture sector. As crop water requirements (CWR) and irrigation water requirements (IR) depend significantly on weather condition, thus study aims to assess impacts of climate change on CWR and IR for one of the irrigation project (i.e., Pyawt Ywa Irrigation Project) located in central dry zone (CDZ) in Myanmar. CROP- WAT 8.0 model was used to estimate CWR and IR. Climate data from local sources were used as input to CROPWAT. And future climate was taken from ACCESS1 Regional Circu- lation Model (RCM) under two scenarios, namely, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Results showed the future climate in the irrigation project area is projected to increase under both the scenar- ios. Consequently, future CWR and IR for all the considered crops are projected to increase. However, due to decrease in average annual effective rainfall, which varies with the crop season (decrease in first crop season and increase in the second one), rate of increase in IR is not same as that of CWR. |
