Influence of personality on driving behavior and accident involvement among Sri Lankan young drivers

AbstractPersonality factors are considered as a main cause of accidents occurring in the roads. This case is even worse and in a very dangerous status among young drivers. So it is necessary to identify which personality traits are influencing on behaviors of drivers and make them involving in huge road crashes and give them suggestions and recommendations to avoid this kind of loses. So, it is the purpose of this research. This study was carried out among Sri Lankan young students who drove in past years and just enrolled last semester to AIT from Sri Lanka. Personality traits was tested by based on big 5 personality questionnaire. Those big 5 personality traits are neuroticism, agreeable- ness, conscientiousness, and extraversion, openness to experience. These personality traits were related to driver behaviors which are categorized as aggressive violations, ordinary vi- olations, errors and lapses and also personality traits were related to accidents which they involved in past three years. This research found that neuroticism positively correlates with aggressive violations and ordinary violations. Agreeableness and conscientiousness show negative correlation with aggressive violations and ordinary violations. Extraversion positively correlates with lapse and openness to experience positively correlates with errors. This research also found that there is a positive strong correlation between neuroticism and accident involvement and it is statistically significant also Conscientiousness shows a negative correlation with accident involvement but comparatively a weak relationship and statistically significant. Openness to experience and extraversion traits are didnt show any significant correlations. Some recom- mendations and suggestions were proposed in order to avoid negative personality traits while driving and practice a better road user behaviors.
