| Abstract | Among the many methods available today to dissipate the destructive energy added to a structure by an earthquake, Viscous Fluid Dampers (VFD) are one of the most widely used and effective. Various properties and arrangements of VFD's are available to maximize the resistance of a structure against a seismic event. The damper is added usually as part of a bracing section in a Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF) which also takes a part of the load. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of varying the damping coefficient (C) on a Diagonally braced frame. C was either kept constant throughout the structure or subjected to a Stiffness Proportional Damping (SPD) method. Further comparisons are to be done with the bracing types of Chevron and V. When C was increased the story drift, acceleration and displacement all decreased but the story shear increased. Therefore from a range of C values the intermediate value was selected for the SPD Method. Results for the SPD Method show a marked improvement compared to the uniform damping cases. Comparison with Chevron and V bracing systems show clearly that the Chevron bracing is far superior in reducing the above mentioned parameters. All time history analyses will be conducted in ETABS. |
