AbstractWater resources and hydrological cycle are highly affected by the climate change phe- nomenon. Sri Lanka has experienced several impacts of climate change including increas- ing temperature and increasing variability of rainfall resulting in extreme weather condition. This study quantifies the changes in future rainfall of Mahaweli river basin of Sri Lanka. The three GCMs BCCCSMI.I, CCSM4 and MIROC5 was used to capture the future rainfall un- der two RCP scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Quantile mapping bias correction technique was used to correct the model biases of the future rainfall. The ensemble future rainfall data was analyzed in three time windows as near future 2020s, middle future 2050s and far future 2080s. The rainfall projections at selected stations will be used to calculate the areal average of rainfall over the climate zones. The temporal and spatial variation in annual, monthly and seasonal rainfall in different climate zones was analyzed. Five rainfall related climate indices (CDD, CWD, PROPTOT, Rx5day and R20mm) were analyzed to see changes in future climate. Analysis showed increase in annual rainfall compared to the baseline, for the entire basin. FIM seasonal rainfall decreases while SWM, SIM and NEM seasonal rain- fall increases in future. The future CDD decreased while CWD and PRCPTOT increased for the entire basin. The result of the study can be used to assist decision makers in future development work related to the Mahaweli river basin.
