AbstractThis report investigates the shearing behaviour of Artificial Solid Waste (ASW) by means of the direct shear test. The test program was conducted on 3 materials, namely, Ex- panded Polystyrene (EPS), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polyethylene Tereph- thalate (PET). These materials were assumed to be representation of domestic municipal waste. The test program also included a set of consolidation tests to study the compress- ibility of the materials. The friction angles obtained from the direct shear tests of individual ASW material under different shearing interface conditions were used to simulate the overall shearing behaviour of the solid waste. The test results on the ASW can probably be adopted for future design and construction of structures over the municipal1andfills.
