AbstractIn modern day the capital city of Sri Lanka, Colombo Metropolitan area faces a serious issue of traffic congestion which leads to number of negative consequences including higher transit times, loss of productivity and environmental pollution. Traffic signal coordination is one of the known cost effective strategies in controlling traffic signals through which vehicles are allowed to move in a green wave easing the congestion. In this research traffic signal coordination is applied to selected intersections in One way and Two way roads. Coordination is based on Bandwidth criterion and the signals are coordinated for varying vehicle speeds. Also queuing effect is taken into consideration for a better practical application. The coordination is analyzed through manual trial and error by drawing time-space diagrams and the effectiveness of coordination is validated via bandwidth efficiency method. The results illustrate that the traffic in Colombo metropolitan area can be reduced by a proper signal coordination in traffic corridors.
