Abstract | At a period of time when the attention and the intensity of the global community is focused on the vital issue of Sustainable Development, the subject of Sustainable Transportation for the citizens has become the important object of so many developed and developing nations in the world. Out of the different modes of public transport available, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has been acknowledged and accepted as the most viable and easily implemented mode of public transport, which has the ability to deliver affordable, fast, and high quality means of conveyance to the multitudes of people across the various countries in the world. Today, there are many cities spread around the world which have embraced the BRT system and many more are planning to implement the system in their own cities. Out of those cities which have already established BRT systems, some have been successful and are reaping the benefits, some have not been successful but are somehow managing to maintain it whist there are other BRT systems which have failed and have been abandoned altogether. This research was undertaken with the objectives of understanding the various attributes of successful and unsuccessful BRT systems and also to identify the main factors which would be helpful in the implementation of a BRT system. In order to achieve this the author carried out an extensive, in depth Literary Review of 20 BRT systems in major cities spread around various countries in the world and also made use of the Logistic Regression Model with SPSS to identify the main factors which have a major influence and would be helpful in the future implementation of a successful BRT system. Although the evaluation and the analysis of the data gathered from the Literature Review was quite sufficient to understand the attributes of successful and unsuccessful BRT systems, the small sample was inadequate to clearly identify the main factors of a successful BRT system but the comprehensive analysis of the Literature Review more than compensated for this shortcoming and was helpful to achieve the desired objectives. It is evident that a successful BRT system need not possess all the required attributes, but should encompass the major ones and also each city will have to have its own exclusive system to be successful. Planning, dedicated and committed political leadership, efficient design, location, provision of the infrastructure and good management will always contribute towards establishing and maintaining a successful BRT which would be the idea solution for the promotion of Sustainable Transportation Systems in many more cities in the world. |
