Abstract | Construction is one among the most hazardous jobs in the world. Nevertheless, it offers high employment opportunities, especially in developing countries where the need of infrastructure is high. Thus, the industry is competitive and construction firms typically focus on the productivity. Health and safety in construction is, however, often given less attention at both national and organizational level in those countries although it greatly affects the overall productivity. This study was conducted to point out how health and safety management is practiced at the construction projects in Yangon, the business center of a developing coun try from Southeast Asia. Questionnaires, interview and visual observation from the three projects revealed that: the priority given for health and safety of the project was minimal; the majority of workers do not have health and safety knowledge; and the organized safety system was not fully developed in the local construction projects. |
