AbstractThe execution of a maintenance activity on a multi-unit system involved not only the unit-dependence cost of each individual unit, but also the system-dependence set-up cost that may be shared with other activities canied out simultaneously. Thus, it costs less to execute two or more maintenance activities concurrently than to execute them individually at different time. Grouping maintenance activities becomes a powerful policy to reduce the total maintenance costs. In this report, an approach is proposed to derive the optimal maintenance policy for multi-unit systems, which each unit has a different time to failure distribution with increasing failure rate (IFR). By this approach, the simple age replacement model using renewal theory is applied for modeling the maintenance of individual units on infinite horizon and then the outcome is used as input to a comprehensive model that opportunities are considered in finding an optimal grouping structure on a finite horizon. An algorithm using the principle of dynamic programming is presented to find an optimal grouping structure for a system with special characteristics and this algorithm can also be used as an approximation method for general systems. Application of the developed approach to a multi-unit system is demonstrated through numerical examples.
