AbstractThe work is mathematical and hydraulic approach for irrigation system management. The mathematical model based on unconstrained minimization is incorporated in an unsteady flow model. The combined model is used to obtain the optimal operation rules under the different inflow condition for the considered network. The evaluation function is also developed for irrigation system in terms of deficit minimization. The combined hydraulic model and mathematical model is applied in the pilot scheme of Narayani Irrigation Development Project with six offtakes and five check structures. Decision variables considered to minimize the deficit are interval time, operation delay for second check structure, operation delay for third check structure, operation delay for fourth check structure and operation delay for fifth check structure. In the analysis, three different months of having very low average flow, average flow, maximum flow are considered to have a clear picture of gate setting operation policies under different situation. The result shows that the optimal interval time is short in low flow condition and high in high flow condition. Fmther the application of the hydraulic model alone is done to get the gate opening chart under the different steady discharge to maintain the full supply level in the main canal.
