Abstract | The ever-increasing human population and the need for economic growth has led to clearing of forests for urbanization. As urban development and crowded population have resulted in increasing air pollution and health problems. Although urban forests such as AIT campus forest has ability to sequester carbon emissions and provide other ecosystem services, their management is at risk due to the lack of long-term interest and financial support. In recent years, carbon offsetting schemes could provide financial support for managing small-scale forests but the lack of info1mation on carbon emission reductions or removals makes it impossible to obtain such support. Using AIT campus forest as a case study, this study developed two management scenarios with and without carbon-based financial support over a 50-year period. Trees on campus were measured and recorded up to species level and related carbon stocks were estimated using allometric equations. On average, carbon stocks were estimated at 48tC/ha. This study suggested that carbon stocks could increase to 3 84tC/ha if this forest is managed and with the cunent carbon price ofUS$3 .3, carbon revenues could be $1 million over 50-year period. In addition to carbon revenues, there are also other ecosyste~ services that are useful for AIT residents. To obtain financial support, it is impo1iant that management plan along with transparent forest carbon monitoring, repo1iing and verification system need to be developed. This research provides useful information for understanding the roles of urban forests in climate change mitigation and how carbon-based financial suppo1i can lead to better management of the urban forests.
