AbstractDhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh is considered as the nucleus of the entire transportation system of the country, which will join in the list of mega cities by 2000 and will rank 9 for its 11.5 million population (Dhaka Structure Plan 1995-2015). Major infrastructural development specially Jamuna Bridge, bridge on the river Buriganga and Sitalakhya in transportation sector will further extend its importance in communication, economical and transportation sector. Due to the poor and disorganized transportation services along with inadequate infrastructural, institutional and management supports, the cunent traffic activity in Dhaka, almost paralyzed by severe traffic congestion, low level of accessibility and mobility, accidents and psychological strains. In this scenario, this research has focused on the general overview of the transportation problem and their causes in Dhaka City as a function of infrastructural insufficiency. The specific objectives of this research are to define the need of Dhaka Eastern Bypass which is expected to be built on the eastern periphery of the city, in reducing the current traffic pressure on the city, to find out the best horizontal alignment for the bypass highway and comparatively analyze the result of this study and the result of Halcrow Fox's study regarding the competence from the view point of different criterion. Methodology applied for this study can be categorized into 3 pa1is: ~ Weighted linear combination methpd for weighing different factors. ~ Cost distance modeling ~ Calculating the least cost path. The resulted alignment of this study has taken the advantages of the different criterion considered in this study and avoids the negative implications of the criterion. Comparison of the resulted alignment with the results of the study of Halcrow Fox reveals that the proposed horizontal alignment is more competent in terms of flood vulnerability and environmental point of view.
