Abstract | In recent years, a new air-conditioning concept has emerged in Europe which has been found to be well accepted. The new concept utilizes radiant panels for both heating and cooling. Using radiant cooling for air conditioning offers advantages over conventional heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HV AC) system. A good thermal comfort environment can be achieved and air transported can be reduced. However, in a tropical climate, study on the radiant cooling has not been conducted, although such method is perceived to offer good potential. This thesis reports an experimental and analytical study of radiant cooling in an experimental room in Energy Park, AIT. It was found that the room were comfortably pleasant and slightly cool during the morning. The mean radiant temperature was lower than the temperature of surfaces in the room. This low mean radiant temperature resulted in lower operative temperature. Condensation problem occurred when the panel was cooled down beyond the dew-point temperature of the air in the room. Physical measurements were made to assess cooling load on the radiant panel. A mathematical model incorporating temperature variables was used to represent the cooling load. The model proved to be accurate and useful and could be used to simulate the cooling load. |
