Abstract | Farmer Managed Irrigation System (FMIS) has played an important role in supporting the
rural economy and development of the irrigated agriculture system in Nepal. However, the
thorough study has not been done in the middle mountain region of Nepal. This study aims to
make a detailed evaluation of rehabilitation assistance in FMIS with a specific attention to
assess the physical, socio-economic and institutional performance. Moreover, case studies of
FMIS: namely Punyamata khola, Aarubote, and Juke Kulo have been done to find out the
impact of assistance in overall development of farming communities. For this, household
questionnaire survey and field observation technique are carried out.
The analysis shows that the mean benefit-cost ratios (BCR) of Punyamata Khola, Aarubote
and Juke Kulo are 6.6, 1.4, and 8.8, however, net incremental household income are 115,794,
47,499, and 44,426 NRS per hectare respectively. Based on the net product value and net input
costs, the benefits in rehabilitation of FMIS 's are generally influenced by the nearness to the
main market facility rather than by the mode of government intervention. The rehabilitation
assistance shows satisfactory results in all three systems. Similarly, the economic analysis also
shows that there is a great payoff to society from investing in FMIS. The BCR is substantially
greater in all three systems. Hence, this study makes a strong case for the further expansion of
investment in FMIS. |
