AbstractReal-time broadcasting over Mbone on the Internet has become common over these past few years. One problem found in this environment is due to the differing time zones in viewing the broadcasted materials. To overcome the inconveniences caused by the time zone problem, a scheme to cache the real-time data from the Mbone for subsequently viewing among members within the same time zone is proposed. This thesis demonstrates a design of relay station which temporarily stores and retransmits the real-time data to the users in the same time zone. From the proposed design, all of the cached data is stored on the hierarchical multi-disk storage from which the retransmission of the cached data takes place by both scheduled multicasting and on-demand mode. The multiple retransmission rates will be set according to the capability of the users' connection lines and their current available bandwidth. Experiments on a prototype relay station implemented in this study have verified the functionalities of the proposed design. It has been shown that if high speed disk drives can be provided at the relay station then high quality of services can be achieved where the final transmission rate is selected appropriately to accommodate the capacity of the connectivity from the relay station to the end receiver. However, with low capacity stations, it has been shown that various adjustments to the buffer sizes could be made to ensure that the broadcast sessions can be received at the relay station with some data loss.
