AbstractTraditional lecture-based teaching is not stimulating to students because they have fewer visual tools to help their understanding and the teaching does not support different learning styles. Moreover, there is insufficient time for the teachers to cover all the topics in detail, besides, the students are responsible for reading the details by themselves. This research is an experiment on computer-assisted learning (CAL) application development to overcome problems in learning construction law and contracts. Student requirements have been determined from the difficulties they experience in learning. The application provides rich environment that enhances individualized and interactive learning. Thus, learning becomes flexible to allow students to learn based on individual styles and objectives. In this study, hypermedia technology is used for courseware development to make the large subject content easy to comprehend. The content has been decomposed into nine chapters and each chapter is connected by hyperlinks. The application is delivered on World Wide Web (WWW) to take advantage of flexibility. ToolBook II Instructor version 6.0 and Microsoft FrontPage 98 are used for Web page edition. Since they are object-oriented environments, the application is developed without the effort of using a computer language. The target students tested the site, and their attitudes were assessed through a questionnaire. The results show that they used the site with less difference based on their English and computer literacy. Most students preferred to overview the content before going into the details, and do some exercises during the learning. The courseware presented law with clear explanations and graphics that made the content easy to understand. Effective navigation tools allowed students to control a sequence of learning and made the subject more interesting. In conclusion, students used deep approach to learning when they interact with the application. It provides a rich environment for students to learn through their preference mode. Distributing the courseware via the Web makes it adaptable, and enables teachers to easily update the site, and students to search external information available on the Web.
