AbstractStrategic planning is an essential function of top management in any construction firm due to the high-risk nature of the business. Nepal is on a transition towards a liberal market economy and therefore local construction companies are increasingly facing a competitive environment especially with international contractors. This research provides a basis for Nepalese contractors to systematically plan their future course of action. Opinions of client representatives were considered in identifying the performance gap between local and international contractors and to prioritize major factors of competitiveness of contractor organizations. Realistic assessment of the firms was based on the factors to identify relative strengths and weaknesses. A significant performance gap was identified in terms of resource management, contract management, management resources and project performance. Environmental scami.ing including scenario planning and econometric model development were carried out to ascertain opportunities and threats posed by the environment. Competitive strategies were formulated using SWOT analysis. Four key issues were identified; organizational development, financial resources, technical and managerial skills and standardization of process-related activities: and major strategies were suggested.
