Abstract | Companies need to change the way they organize and conduct their business in order
to cope with the volatile business environment. Changes can be done through re-organizing
the business processes to achieve dramatic improvement in terms of quality, speed, cost of
product and services offered to customers. Business engineering (BE) is an approach that
could be used to achieve these desired objectives. BE focuses on processes which brings forth
the need for consistent methods and techniques for process modeling, that is to capture,
represent and assess the performance of the business process. Object-oriented (00) paradigm
is the most recent approach that could be used for business process modeling and it must be
supported by workflow analysis and simulation techniques to fully represent a specific
business domain. In this study, the concept of BE has been developed and applied using
integrated 00 approach to represent two core processes within Solomon Islands Ports
Authority operation. Firstly, the 00 and Workflow Analysis models were developed and
applied to the selected process on the "AS-IS" basis. Based on these models the redesign of
the processes are carried out using simulation tools to determine different alternatives.
Finally, the desired processes were re-modeled to represent the "TO-BE" process that could be
the basis for development of information system (IS) to support the re-engineering effort. |
