Abstract | Many developing countries in the Asia have inadequate health care and medical services, they
have a shortage of doctors and have inadequate infrastructures of telecommunications, roads
and transports. This makes it difficult to provide health care in remote and rural areas.
Telecommunications has the potential solve some of these problems. Telemedicine is a means
of using telecommunications to provide medical assistance at a distance.
The success of a telemedicine service will depend heavily on which technologies and services
are used, on how appropriate they are to particular countries, keeping in mind the suitability
and availability of the resources, funds, etc.
This study reviews telemedicine, different telemedicine applications and the technologies
required for diffusion of telemedicine. It itemizes the costs and benefits of telemedicine and
suggests a framework to follow for the development of a telemedicine system in Asia. The
study identifies the complexities inherent in the development of telemedicine systems in the
developing countries in Asia and also reflects on a number of yet unresolved issues related to
telemedicine. The study concludes with comments and recommendations on the situation of
telemedicine in Asia. |
