Abstract | Most of the rural areas in Cambodia have insufficient quality of water supply and
inadequate sanitation facilities. Because often the people in rural area defecate and dispose in
the field or near by water sources, contamination of drinking water and other water resources
occurs.
This Study is concerned with rural water consumption and improvement of Water Supply
in Domestic Water Supply and Sanitation in Srork and Trien Communes, Kampong Sieam
District, in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia.
It describes the pattern of rural water use, and the problems related with the existing water
sources and sanitation. It suggests the solutions for those problems by improving clean potable
water supply. An attempt is also made to study the feasibility of an organized rural water
supply system for both Communes.
For an organized rural water supply system for Srork and Trien Communes, the factors
considered are: villagers' interest in forming water user groups, willingness to pay and
contribute in the rural water supply program and their preference of agencies to undertake
these improvements.
Health and personal hygiene education are very important too in rural areas. A part of
health and hygiene improvement is only possible through supply of sufficient safe water and
hygiene education.
For improving the situation in both Communes, a plan is proposed, encompassing the
formation and training of 86 water user groups in order to take care and maintain individual
water points. 86 new water points are suggested to be provided with three types of standard
hand pumps in Cambodia.
The direct beneficiaries of the project will be the families using the well at an average of
30 families per well, these will comprise 2,308 families with 12,481 persons. The period of
implementation of the project is one year, by co-operation with the Provincial Department of
Rural Development, under Ministry of Rural Development. |
