AbstractOrganizations worldwide are embracing the use of information technology at an ever in creasing rate. Most organizations view technology as a means of increasing efficiency and pro ductivity. They use different methods of communications and information access from ordinary postal services to the use of electronic mail. They also encounter different problems not only in finding the information they need but also in disseminating the information in the most effective and efficient way to all members of their organizations. Twenty managers/directors were interviewed from five telecommunications companies - Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Siemens - to investigate the information management methods and problems as discussed above. Methods of information access used by these interna tional companies were also identified including the problems they encountered before the use of intranet. These companies are deploying intranets today as they seek to harness the potential of internet technologies for the sharing of information and the facilitation of collaboration. They use intranet in the different functional department within their organizations like costumer ser vice and support, engineering, finance and accounting, human resources, IT, maintenance and operation, and sales and marketing. The different applications and benefits get in using intranet . of these functional departments are discussed in this thesis. These companies agree that implementing an intranet begins with an explicit understanding of the objectives being sought, and that its goal should be to enable as many people in the organization as possible to be full participants in the communication process. Thus, the develop ment, implementation and management process of successful corporate intranets cannot be ig nored. This thesis presents a framework from formulating vision to resolving organizational challenges in intranet planning and implementation which can be used to assist organizations who plan to implement the use of corporate intranet.
