AbstractPreventive maintenance is important for the equipment. It exhibits increasing failure rates, and very high failure maintenance costs compared to preventive maintenance costs. This study analyzed the maintenance activities of tractors, which are very crucial as failure of one component can have a large impact on the whole system in Savar Dairy Farm, Bangladesh. Some procedures were developed to optimize maintenance-related costs, at the same time keeping a high level of reliability. In this study, the whole system was classified into separate groups based on function and location of individual components. Based on cost data, the optimal replacement times were calculated. In order to use the limited repair resources effectively, priorities were set up for carrying out overhauls, repairs, and replacement. The criteria employed in the decision model was optimum time and cost for preventive maintenance, cost of maintenance operation or the budget and equipment reliability improvement that can be achieved through repairs and maintenance.
