AbstractChina is the world's second producer of fruits and leader in the production of apple. However, about 20% of fruit are damaged annually and thus farmer get reduced income. In order to reduce excess fruit losses, ensure an increase in farmers' income, and protect their motivation for fruit plantation, the government assists by its credit-policy to establish or extend the processing industry in the fruit plantation areas. The fruit juice industry, engaged in concentrated fruit juice extraction, is one of the fastest growing subsectors in the country. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the status of the fruit juice extraction industry in China and study the selected fruit juice enterprises in Shandong province. To meet the research objectives, both primary and secondary information were gathered and analyzed. Interviews with entrepreneurs and their enterprises in Shandong province and verbal interviews with government officials and various agencies relevant to the fruit juice industry were carried out. The survey indicated that the fruit juice extraction industry has developed rapidly since the 1980s and has positive socio-economic impacts in Shandong province. The study assessed the status of enterprises, key equipment, spare parts, the annual production period, optimum size of plants. The research analyzed the market coverage and the change of export price of product in the recent years. The relationship among fruit growers, processing industry and market was explored. Moreover the major problems faced by enterprises were identified through entrepreneurs. Finally, proposals for recommendation have been given.
